DescriptionStudents will discuss challenges posed by the historical archives of the Caribbean, which are incomplete, and which often reflect the bias and interest of the colonial government, enslavers, and the elite. By analyzing specific texts, students will identify how specific archival materials such as newspapers or historical photographs are informed by these interests and how they may also challenge those interests. Finally, students will consider how they might employ archival documents to illuminate the life of a Caribbean individual or community.
