A cross-cultural web exchange project, Project Ibunka 2021, Call for Participation Hello, again! I'm Masahito Watanabe, Wata, at Yokohama National University, Japan. I'm going to organize a new web-based intercultural exchange project, Ibunka 2021, again this year. “Ibunka” means "different cultures" in Japanese. This is a web-based bulletin board discussion in English among partner students from various countries. Since 2000, more than 6,000 students from different countries have participated in the project. Last year, in 2020, from Sep. 28 to Dec. 24, 175 high school and university students from Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, joined the project and exchange 849 written messages on the boards. During the twelve weeks of the project, participants will take up the following three major discussion themes: 1) school life, 2) cultures, and 3) social issues and world peace. Messages that seriously consider current international conflicts and promote the world peace are especially welcomed. The native speakers of English can of course join the project. Best, ----------------------------------- Project Overview The site is password protected. Only registered teachers and students can access the site. No anonymous accesses are allowed. ******IMPORTANT******* If you'd like to expect the maximum outcomes from your students, your leadership as a language teacher is inevitable. The web bulletin board system of the project has several unique features so that teachers can moderate students' postings. You should carefully consider how you can incorporate the project into your class activities and evaluation. ********************** 1. Project Schedule Students are going to post their messages on the dedicated website for discussion throughout the project. The following is the general discussion plan: 1) School life (Sept. 27 - Oct. 24) Every partner school hosts its bulletin board. First, students who host the board with their school name on it post introductory messages about their school life and invites comments from other partner students. postings with 200 or more words, comments with 150 or more words 2) Cultures (Oct. 25 - Nov. 21) Students discuss various aspects of their own domestic cultures, such as festivals and special events, food culture, fashion, entertainment, etc. postings with 300 or more words, comments with 150 or more words 3) Social issues - world peace (Nov. 22 - Dec. 23) Students discuss various domestic and international issues, such as juvenile crimes, environmental issues, educational issues, regional conflicts in the world, etc. postings with 400 or more words, comments with 150 or more words 4) Special work for commemorating the project (Nov. 22 - Dec. 23) Students create three-to-five-minute video clips and upload them onto a shared cloud storage. The following are the steps you must take for your students to be officially registered: 2. How to join the project 1) Send your e-mail to me. You'll get a guest access account to the previous project so that you can see what had been going on in the previous project. I will also send more detailed information and an MS Excel file on which you type in your students' information. If you're interested in it, please proceed to the next steps. 2) Take pictures of each student. Take pictures of your students. Take one picture for each student, make it smaller in file size (10 - 30 kb in jpeg compressed). Make a list of student names and picture file names. 3) Key in student names, student ids, and e-mail addresses, picture file names in the MS Excel file. Student Name Student ID e-mail picture file name e.g., John Smith 12001168 12001168.jpg In the MS Excel file, please type in the file names of your students. Please do not paste the pictures directly onto MS Excel sheets. 4) Send the relevant files to me via e-mail. Send the MS Excel file and all of the pictures of your students to me via e-mail.
